Our Process

We keep our work simple and close to the forest. Fresh conifer boughs are harvested thoughtfully, cooled in a walk-in cooler to hold freshness, and distilled in small batches soon after harvest. The goal is the same every time: keep each scent we offer true to the trees it came from.

What single-species means

Each collection is scented with only one species’ essential oil that we distill ourselves. No synthetic fragrance oils, no isolates, no added “pine” boosters. The profile you smell comes from the tree and the site it grew on.

Freshness first

Time and temperature matter, both in harvest and distillation. Harvested boughs are held in our walk-in cooler until ready to be distilled. This helps preserve lighter top notes that can fade if boughs sit in warm, dry air.

Steam distillation, done small

We use traditional steam distillation to extract essential oils because it moves aroma out of the plant without the use of solvents. Steam is simply passed through plant material (e.g., needles & wood), gently lifting the aromatic compounds, and then condensed back to a liquid. The distillate separates into essential oil and hydrosol (also known as floral waters or hydrolats). We run slowly and evenly, and unlike many commercial distillers, we end each run when the quality tapers rather than pushing for maximum yield.

Why batches vary

Trees are not identical. Site, season, and weather shape the aroma. We see that as a strength. Douglas-fir can show more lemon-lime in some runs and read greener in others. Ponderosa can lean warmer or show more anise. Noble Fir often stays mild and balsamic. We keep batches separate and clearly labeled so you can notice those differences over time.
