FAQs

Real answers about our oils, hydrosols, and how we make everything. If you don't see your question here, email hello@rogueevergreens.com.

Almost everything "pine" on the market is a synthetic fragrance built in a lab. We do the opposite: we steam-distill our own essential oils from fresh Pacific Northwest conifer boughs, one species at a time, in small batches in Ashland, Oregon - and every product we make is scented with those oils and nothing else. One founder, five species, no fragrance oils, no blends.

Because they're the actual chemistry of the tree. Every conifer species builds its own aromatic compounds - that's why a Douglas-fir smells nothing like a Ponderosa - and steam distillation carries that chemistry straight into the bottle. We distill each species separately and never blend, so what you smell is one tree's real profile, not a lab's idea of "pine."

From the forests around us in southern Oregon - the Siskiyous and the Cascades. We harvest fresh boughs ourselves, and much of our material comes from fuel-reduction and forest-health projects, where branches and small trees are removed to lower wildfire risk. We turn what those projects would leave behind into something worth keeping.

No. We practice selective bough tipping: small cuts spread across many trees, leaders left intact, areas rotated so branches regrow. The goal is a healthier stand, not a harvested one. The rest of our material is byproduct from wildfire-risk reduction work that was happening anyway.

Our carrier oils are certified organic where you see "organic" on the label (organic jojoba, organic camellia seed oil, and more - each product page lists its ingredients). The conifer boughs themselves are wild material from healthy Oregon stands - nothing sprayed, nothing treated - though wild-gathered material doesn't carry an organic certification.

Yes. Every drop of scent added to our products comes from essential oil that we distill ourselves from wild-harvested evergreens. Made in small batches right here in Oregon. Our hydrosols are the pure distillation waters of those same trees. No fragrance oils, no synthetic "pine" boosters, nothing from a lab. Complete ingredient lists are on the product pages.

Douglas-fir if you want the classic bright evergreen most PNW natives grew up with. Grand Fir if you like citrus. Noble Fir if you want understated and resinous. Ponderosa Pine if sharp pine has put you off before - it runs warm, like butterscotch. Incense Cedar if you want the deepest, strongest scent we make. Or start with a discovery set and let your nose decide.

If you're near one of the independent shops that carry our products, stop in - see our store directory for locations in Oregon and Washington. From home, the discovery sets are the easy way to explore every species in small sizes. And if you order from our online store and a scent isn't for you, returns are free within 30 days.

Because it's the real thing. Natural conifer scents are brighter and settle sooner than synthetic fragrance, which is engineered to linger. Shake the room sprays well before use, and reapply when you want the scent back. If you want our strongest scent, start with Incense Cedar.

A hydrosol is not a diluted essential oil. It's the aromatic water from steam distillation, carrying water-soluble plant compounds the oil doesn't capture. Hydrosols are skin-first products - gentle facial toners and body mists with a subtle scent that fades within minutes. Essential oils are concentrated and made for a diffuser, not for skin.

Not straight from the bottle - pure conifer oils are concentrated and should always be diluted before skin contact. Our essential oil rollers and body oils are the ready-to-wear options.

Please keep all concentrated essential oils away from pets, and don't apply any product to an animal or spray it on pet bedding. Product pages have a Safety section with specifics. If you share your home with cats, be especially careful with diffusers - when in doubt, ask your vet.

Start with a few drops and adjust to your room - each product page has exact guidance under How to Use. Incense Cedar is our strongest oil; a little goes a long way.
